3. Memo to the President

Memorandum

To: Dr. Vincent Boudreau, President of City College

From: Andre Cunningham, Student of City College

Subject: Elevators and Escalators – NAC Building

Date: February 13, 2019

This memo serves the purpose to inform you the technical problems that myself and other students are having with both the escalators and the elevators to access the classrooms high up in the NAC building.

Summary:

Overall, the escalators do not run for certain times but these times are usually the NAC building’s busiest times. For the elevators, it always feels as the stairs are a faster option as the elevators need a surplus amount of repairs.

Discussion:

Addressing the escalator problem first, it causes people to walk up and down but many people flock to the closest one to them leading to one set of escalators used and the other one empty. Another problem with the escalators I have witnessed was during the fire drill during the winter 2018 semester. Multiple students on the escalator caused it to speed up and become dangerous if someone was not paying attention.

For the elevators it feels as they operate very slowly. Many times, the elevator doors will open multiple times before leaving a floor even when no one is requesting it to be open. The decision making is the not the best too as sometimes the elevator currently at the 2nd floor would choose going to the 7th floor first instead of going to the 1st floor. For the ride, it is not very smooth with the elevator shaking multiple times and making many screeching noises. The final problem with the elevators is that the indicators above to tell a person if it is going down or up never seem to work.

Recommendation:

I do not feel like a meeting is necessary but the best thing you can do is wait until the summer, when campus is empty, and work on both escalators and elevators. For the escalators work on it towards the end of the day and for the elevators, try to always leave one running in each pair so there is still another option that is not the stairs.
