ENGL 21007
When I first entered ENGL 21007, i thought it would just another English class where I would write random papers and give a quick presentation to get a final grade but I learned way more than I expected to. Not only did I improve my English (spelling and grammar), I also got to learn many ethical lessons about the engineering workplace.
We first started the semester learning about different types of writing such as letters, memos and lab reports. This did not seem important to me at first, but listening in class and writing these papers it made me realize these are very important factors in the workplace down the road. All these forms of writing are very useful to communicate with co-workers when its either asking for extra info or giving information on your latest innovation or finding. For the letter, my weakness was formatting the letter which caused me to lose a small amount of points. This helped me improve my formatting for the rest of the assignments. For the memo, there were a small amount of grammar errors in my paper. For the lab report, the only thing that went wrong was not properly using APA format for the lab report leading to a lower grade but nothing too bad to talk about.
For the next half of the semester, we focused mostly on our technical description and the presentation. For the technical description, I wanted to choose an item to talk about that I used daily. A pen would have been a simple solution to this but I wanted to be unique from other people so I decided to use the metro card, something i commute with everyday. Writing this assignment was a little difficult at first as I was in a rough time with my life at the time, but I still gave in the assignment, very late, but completed. For this assignment, I missed a table of contents to show my organization of information and included unnecessary information that contributed nothing to the text. For the presentation, I was first not looking forward to it as I still had no one to work with and time was running out but later I found a group with all the same interests in cars. We decided to choose a topic on electric cars powered by solar energy. The only struggle for this innovation was collecting information for the solar panels as a lot of the information was kept secret with the company. They will only share the information if another company wants to make a deal with them.
In conclusion, writing for engineers was a very helpful class that let me know what to expect in the future when working in whatever engineer workplace. Not only for engineering, but in any workplace as most of the things learned this semester can be applied to many situations in other jobs. I hope this information stays in my head as I continue my journey in becoming an electrical engineer.
